רוח היא תנועה של חלקיקי אוויר שנעים יחד בכיוון מסוים. האטמוספירה המקיפה את כדור הארץ מהווה מעין משאבה גדולה המעבירה חום וחלקיקים של אוויר בין האזורים השונים שעל כדור הארץ. שינויים בלחץ האוויר, ושינויים בטמפרטורת האוויר קובעים את כיוון הרוח ומהירותה. תופעה זו מושפעת על ידי תופעות אחרות על פני הקרקע למשל יערות, מדבריות, גושי מים גדולים, וגם בניינים. רוב החשמל שמופק מאנרגיית הרוח מופק כיום באמצעות טורבינות רוח.

כיוון הטורבינה אל הרוח
הטורבינה עוקבת אחרי השינויים בכיוון הרוח ואינה קבועה במקום. מנגנון שינוי הכיוון יכול להיות זנב פאסיבי, או ע"י צורת להבים מיוחדת הגורמת להם להתנהג כמו זנב או ע"י מערכת בקרה המודדת את כיוון הרוח ומזיזה את הטורבינה.
שטח המערכת
רוטור הטורבינה הוא בקוטר של 6 מטרים. אך שטח הקרקע שתופס התורן הוא קטן עד זניח. ניתן ורצוי להמשיך לעבד את הקרקע החקלאית בין התרנים. המרחק המינמלי בין טורבינות הוא 18 מטרים (שלוש פעמים קוטר הרוטור). במערכת של 4 טורבינות (15KW), ניתן להעמידן בשורה אחת לאורך של לפחות-54 מטרים או בצורת ריבוע או טרפז כך שהאורך של כל צלע הוא לפחות 18 מטרים.
